Big Rug, the Hamilton area women’s team, returned to defend their title this June at Solstice in Toronto. With a younger and much shorter roster, the team rallied with a fantastic zone defense. Sporting their traditional Big Rug spray-painted t-shirts, this year’s nick names were over the top. Mount Blondie, Mrs. Bush and Mocha Chichita were some of the crowd favorites. Despite three untimely injuries one week before the tournament, Big Rug was able to pick up some wicked ladies from Toronto – thanks gals.

This rag-tag group of girls may not be known for their slick, groomed style of ultimate, but their spirit and grit were remarkable. And, their cheers hilarious – for those of age. Able to huck long, pop short and layout, Big Rug were ladies out to play and party hard. Regardless of the loss of the title in 2004, Big Rug would call the tournament a huge success as it gave many new, younger ladies a chance to challenge themselves and push harder as they rarely get a change to play against women. The results of this tournament can be seen throughout the HUC league. When you see these ladies back in co-ed they’ve got more confidence and spunk. Way to go ladies. Lookin’ forward to next year. Stay tuned for information on try outs for 2005. GO BIG RUG!
